In 2025, a total of 132 incidents of piracy and armed robbery of ships were reported in Asia, an increase of 23% compared to 2024. Among them, 130 were armed robberies and 2 were pirate incidents. 82% (108 incidents) occurred in the Strait of Malacca - Singapore (SOMS) and reached a new high since 2007. The severity of the incidents was mainly CAT 3 and CAT 4 (accounting for 92%), and 86% occurred at night. Bulk carriers were the main targets (47%). After the Indonesian authorities arrested the perpetrators in July and August, the number of incidents significantly decreased in the fourth quarter. The ReCAAP ISC promoted regional collaboration through digital tools, cooperation meetings, etc., and provided targeted prevention suggestions to law enforcement agencies and crew members.
